About William (“Bill”) Blackford, Esq.
A love of people and a curiosity to understand the world and our human condition has guided much of Bill Blackford’s life and work over his more than two decades of trial and litigation experience. Ever the persistent questioner of conventional wisdom, Bill continues to broaden the understanding of the law and help clients with a philosopher’s curiosity and fidelity to the truth. He believes the best advocacy starts with a foundation of understanding — not only of the law and the facts, but also of his clients, their challenges, and their values and objectives. As with the captain of any ship, it is only with a full understanding, respect and empathy for each client that Bill can help guide them to the right destination.
For over twenty years, Bill has represented individuals and businesses in a wide range of matters, including complex civil and business litigation, high-stakes divorce and family disputes, estate and trust matters, disputes concerning wills, caveat actions and trust administration, as well as multimillion-dollar personal injury and wrongful death cases. Whether before a jury or an appellate panel, he is known for combining strategic precision with clear, practical advice that empowers clients to make informed decisions.
Experience and Approach
After earning his law degree from the University of Maryland School of Law, Bill began his career in the Baltimore City State’s Attorney’s Office before joining a regional law firm specializing in business, commercial and construction litigation. Over time, he developed a broad civil litigation background handling construction disputes, contract and business matters, homeowner claims, and corporate planning and succession issues.
Disillusioned with the culture and business operation of large firms, Bill founded his own practice to make a difference for Maryland families and business owners who deserved exceptional legal representation without the large-firm price tag. Over the course of fifteen years, Bill has built a firm that blends large-firm quality with small-firm accessibility, attention and affordability, offering clients personal interaction, regular communication, and cost-effective representation. Bill’s Jesuit education instilled the value of living as a “man for others” and he remains committed to sharing his talents with the belief that fair and equal justice should never be out of reach for a Maryland family or business.
A Maryland Foundation
Born and raised in Mt. Airy, Bill spent his childhood in Howard and Frederick Counties and attended St. John’s Catholic School in Frederick. His parents instilled in him the value of hard work, humility, perseverance, and respect for others (especially those you disagree with) and humility.
At Loyola High School in Towson, Bill discovered his love for philosophy and theology, a passion that deepened through his studies at Saint Joseph’s University, where he graduated with honors and a double major in Philosophy and English Literature. His faith remains a guiding force in both his personal and professional life and he and his family remain active in their parish community.
Leadership and Community
Bill is active in Maryland’s legal and faith communities. He has served as President of Civil Justice, Inc., a nonprofit legal organization focused on consumer protection and access to justice, where he helped oversee major grants and class action efforts. He is also a member of the Maryland State Bar Association, the St. Thomas More Society, and several local bar associations.
Recognized for his excellence in written and oral advocacy, Bill has been named a Super Lawyers honoree for multiple years and frequently appears as a speaker and commentator on legal issues. He is admitted to practice in both state and federal courts in Maryland and the District of Columbia.
Outside the Office
When not practicing law, Bill enjoys spending time with his wife and children, playing ice hockey, gardening, hiking Maryland’s trails, and searching for the state’s best crab cake (for the record, he says it’s at Koco’s Pub in Baltimore). A lifelong Washington football fan, Bill approaches sports, law, and life with the same enthusiasm and pragmatism: committed, loyal, fearless and practical but never without a good sense of humor. Above all, he aspires to be remembered as a humble servant of God, a trusted, smart and good-hearted attorney by his clients, colleagues and co-workers, a devoted party of his family, a good friend to many and an asset to his community.
